Don’t hang up when calling 911

Recently, Aurora911 initiated a change so callers whose call is not immediately answered will hear a recorded message instead of only hearing the line ring. The recorded message is meant to assure callers that their attempt to connect their phone to 911 was successful and that call takers are aware of their call and will answer as soon as possible.

This is a nationally common practice in emergency communications centers, intended to keep callers on the line when call volume exceeds available call takers. The recorded message was introduced due to an increased call volume, as well as the increased frequency of callers hanging up and calling again in a short period regarding the same emergency.

Since 911 call takers respond to every single call (including ones that hang up), repeat calls move people farther back in line and delay the process to properly address an emergency. The fastest way to reach assistance in an emergency is to call 911 and stay on the line. Residents also need to be responsible and not use 911 for non-emergency calls. It should only be used for medical, fire, or police emergencies. Non-emergency public safety calls can go to 303.627.3100.

For city services, people can call 303.739.7000, use the Access Aurora app, or visit AuroraGov.org/ContactUs. Emergency call lines are staffed 24 hours, seven days a week. Aurora911 is here to respond to crises and will continue to review all options to best serve our community.

April 16 open house on 13th Avenue mobility

At an upcoming open house, the city of Aurora will share a draft concept for proposed changes to a portion of 13th Avenue to make walking, biking, driving, and rolling safer and more comfortable for people of all ages on the corridor.

Residents are invited to show up anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy, 10100 E. 13th Ave., to share opinions on a draft concept that includes a new shared path next to the road, changes to parking and improved lighting. The feedback gathered will assist the city in finalizing the recommendations.

This important corridor connects residents, students and businesses to their neighborhood, city and region and places like schools, parks, a light rail station, trails, job centers, stores and restaurants.

Residents who need language interpretation at the open house may email language@auroragov.org by April 2 to make a request. Anyone who cannot attend the April 16 open house may view the draft concept online starting April 18 at EngageAurora.org/13th and provide feedback.

To review additional information about the project, visit EngageAurora.org/13th. For questions, contact Tom Worker-Braddock at 303.739.7340 or tworker@auroragov.org.
